48th Paris International Air & Space Show: from the Blériot XI to the Airbus A380: 100 years of the Paris Air Show

The 48th session of the world's biggest air and space show took place at Le Bourget from 15 to 21 June 2009.
For its centenary, the event welcomed a record 2,000 exhibitors from 48 countries, 142 aircraft (including at least 42 presented in flight), 11 French government ministers, 205 official delegations from 88 countries, 62 French delegations, plus 3,000 journalists.

A total of 380,000 people were present at Le Bourget (including delegations, journalists and exhibitors). In addition to 140,000 trade visitors, the Show welcomed 205,000 visitors from the general public.

The Espace Métiers Formations, the show's trades, professions, training and education area, drew more than 50,000 people. The 16th Forum Air & Espace alone had 40,000 visitors. High-school and university students and young graduates flocked to meet Gifas, companies and educational and training establishments to find out about the careers and courses available in the aerospace sector.

All the main players - manufacturers and subcontractors from all over the world - were present. The event was, once again, an opportunity to unveil new aircraft to the public: the Sukhoi Superjet 100, the new Russian twin-engine regional transport aircraft, and Camcopter helicopter UAV from Austrian company Schiebel, the first UAV presented in flight at an air show. Eurocopter unveiled its new EC175 helicopter (full-scale mock-up on the EADS stand - Hall 2A). Out on the tarmac, GECI International was showing a full-scale mock-up of its Skylander SK 105 turboprop project and two Reims Aviation F406s. Also in the static display area, Daher-Socata presented the TBM 700B MMA, the multi-mission version (intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance) of its turboprop engine. The first images of the SPIRALE space-based early warning system demonstrator, put into orbit in February 2009, were available for viewing in the Ministry of Defence's 'Espace Défense'. Aeroart showed the Plume mini-UAV for the first time.
